Installation Errors, yet again...

Postby Fishbones » Wed Sep 12, 2007 4:24 pm

I've finally decided how I'm going to boot Linux (via a Dual-Boot).

I've downloaded the LiveCD, and thought all was good. I am installing the Ubuntu distribution, and as I was installing, I came across a partition error. I am trying to use a Guided install, resizing sda2 and using the unallocated space after the partition. I receive an error from GParted (Gnome Partition Manager) on install.

Any help is appreciated greatly. Thanks.

Here.

EDIT:

I figured out what I need to do, well I've known all along, except I forgot that I had to resize the C: partition from Windows, not the LiveCD. I have PartitionMagic, but everytime I attempt to do something it tells me that I only have an evaluation copy and does not perform the action I request. Anyone know of a similar freeware program that can get the job done?

GParted claims to be able to resize NTFS partitions. Clicking on "save details" and posting the results on their website might get you a better response. The only guess I can think of is that you might have to defrag your NTFS partition.

Maybe the NTFS partition has some minor errors within it. Also, try repartitioning from within windows with another program. Something like PartitionMagic should do the trick. That way you can just pick the open space in linux and not have to do it from there.

Partition Magic always says that its only an evaluation copy, so I can't resize... I hit "Apply" and nothing happens in PartitionMagic.

Well, that's the limitation of the unregistered edition, PM is completely useless if you don't have a regsitered version.

Posting more information. This drive just won't partition, I've defragged it as well already.

Tried to get it, but you have to buy it. If someone can PM me how to get it without that, feel free :) I was in Linux when Ghosthawk recommended that, so I didn't click the link... Then again I didn't write it down :(

Who said anything about pirating?

He could download a copy with bittorrent and then purchase a perfectly legitimate license key!

Fishbones I'm willing to connect to you via ssh and fiy the problems.

Just create a ssh server and tell me IP + user + pass.

I have a ton of experience about linux and I remember how grateful I was when somebody fixed my linux distro back in the days.

Plus I like spreading the linux community.

Send me an PM.

If he wants to learn, he should be doing it himself, not having someone else just connect and do it for him.
