Switching to ubuntu for first time!

Post by Apache/1.3.3.7 » Mon Mar 12, 2007 5:39 pm

I am switching to Ubuntu today!

I own 2 CPUs. 1 is entirely Windows XP (this one) and the other is entirely Fedora Core 5. I'm planning to share the other CPU so it has Fedora Core 5 and Ubuntu 6.10. I just wanted to ask, is ubuntu a good linux? better than fc5 in any way? or am I just wasting my time...

One last thing... I know this is a very stupid question but I just wanna know. Can Ubuntu open (run) .tar.gz files? I know that was a really noobish question - I'm just asking.

thanks,

Apache/1.3.3.7

I just recently switched to Ubuntu, and I like it.
Can Ubuntu open (run) .tar.gz files?
Yes.

Yeah, I'm going to stick with this rather than my windows for a while. I found Ubuntu really easy to install unlike red hat or fedora. (Fedora was a pain)

I installed this really cool Beryl desktop thinghttp://www.beryl-project.org/
I recommend it anyone using any form of Linux

I'm on Ubuntu 7.04(Feisty Beta) right now and I love it.

I tried OpenSUSE 10.2 at first, but I found out quickly that Synaptic > Yast. Not to mention the support Ubuntu has.

I'd use beryl or compiz or one of the other theme managers but I get a really nice WSOD when I load them up.

Damned integrated graphics.

:) :) :)

Know what I think would be even cooler than Ubuntu with beryl (or pretty much any other wm)? Fluxbuntu. To break it down in the simplest terms Fluxbox = teh sekz.

Yeah I'm a big fan of Fluxbox too, I have it on my dual P3 and the P4. Main rig has Ubuntu + KDE + Beryl though - it is very nice.

I heard Beryl and Compiz are merging (reverse forking lol), could be some interesting things coming out of their camp when they get it all sorted out.

Personally, I think ubuntu is great, I cant compare it to Fedora Core because I haven't tried it but it has awesome software and is one of the best looking distributions.

You've got two CPUs, do you? And you're going to install an OS on each CPU? I wish my CPU could have an OS on it, instead all it does it execute instructions. Maybe I need to upgrade, and then I could dual-boot my CPU. Now imagine if I got a dual-core...
My effort to help you will never exceed your effort to explain the problem.
