Distributed password cracking software?

Post by Cool_Fire » Fri Nov 07, 2008 2:56 pm

Would anyone happen to know of an application (like john the ripper etc) that can crack Linux passwords? (FreeBSD MD5)

And here's the catch: It needs to allow me to split it into multiple threads, so I can distribute it over a cluster. (Or do it in multiple threads by default.)

I'm pretty sure that doing multiple million hashes a second like most hash-"cracking" software is capable of requires multiple threads. That is, I believe that most does so by default.

John the ripper isn't. (Well, not practically or efficiently.)

Close, but no cigar.
They just suggest running multiple instances of the application to do multiple password hashes or word lists at once.
There's no actual multi threading going on.

Example: cisilia; takes an argument -n with the number of threads you want it to spawn.
Unfortunately, it doesn't support cracking Linux hashes.

Have you considered rainbow tables?

Yes, but then I haven't found any for FreeBSD MD5.

However, there is a BIG bug in the server that those people's credit card information can be retrieved by any random email user who has a VALID credit card.
