Whilst winblows freindly i liked nod32, but being the free source whore I am im back on linux and by far prefer clam AV.

Although I will say that the best winblows system I ever used had deepfreeze running and I occasionally scanned with an up to date AV and malware scanner, and I never found an issue with it.

its hard to find key for kis 7 though..with the new release maybe they ll stop blacklisting older keys. they just push u more and more towards *unix. but for win, kaspersky is the best.

Lol AVG 8 is a damn resource hog my friend. Before that it wasn't too bad. But now, I'd go with Avast.

I like Avira Antivir. I find it's not a resource hog and seems to offer good detection. Used to use AVG for the longest time, but I wasn't impressed when they introduced AVG8 as it was a little too bloated for me.

i believe it is made by gri software.

i prefer it over the behemoth drivespace and resource wasting norton.
good post bro, i'll look into it.
I Believe that NOD32 is probably the best Anti-virus in the market, But I could also be wrong.....

I love Kaspersky.
Yes, It does suck up resources, but then Im on 3ghz C2D with 2 GB Ram. So Who cares ?

I'll give second place to AVG, it super fast + freee.
I was using NOD32, before they switched to that Security Suite, which sucks.
When Nod32 ( without firewall and shit) was there ) detection was awesome.. Now its not so gd.

To all you n00bs talking about AVG being great and light weight....retards....for one...AVG doesnt find jack...ive used sucky antivirus/antispyware programs before that catch way more than AVG even attempts to find. For 2, it is NOT lightweight, by any means. Anyone that thinks AVG is lightweight is a complete retard. Check out your running processes when AVG is running....at least 3, and ive seen up to 5. And for 3, AVG thinks that it needs to update 10 times a day and most of the time it doesnt even do anything. Just hogs your internet and cpu. To all the AVAST users.... HA...avast is a joke, nothing more to say about that. Mcafee is very thorough and nice, but it does hog some system resources for sure. Norton...well norton itself is a virus so you are defeating the purpose of an antivirus just by installing it. Now on to kaspersky....if you even run kaspersky, you are stupid, or you don't keep up on the latest IT news. http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/02/08/2218256 this article tells about kaspersky being hacked and having thousands of accounts stolen. In my point of view, even using kaspersky these days is a security risk. And this is not the first time that kaspersky has been heavily compromised. Now that the main sucky ones are out of the way, i will continue with some of the programs that would not be so bad and can actually be beneficial. First of all, if your running windows (which im assuming you are because yous are talking about virus's :P) then a lot of virus problems can be solved by preemptive maintenance. By this i mean, make sure your pop up blockers are working, another big one is DON'T use Internet Explorer (that would be your first mistake). Don't download stuff that obviously isn't real. Don't google for porn...there are many sites out there that are legitimate and dont spam you with virus's. (Ex: badjojo and youjizz LOL) I had to put that in here because 75% of virus's come from porn lol. Don't be clicking OK and YES on every little add you see and that pops up. I would recommend using multiple antispyware/antivirus. Just one tool will never do the job. Spybot has been a great utility in the past, but these days it just isn't keeping up. An amazing tool that i have ran into is MalwareBytes. This is thee only tool that i have found to get rid of the nastiest virus's, (including WinAntiVirus 2009 :D). in combination with malwarebytes i also use uniblue's power suite. (also helps system wide performance. XoftSpy is great for rouge virus's such as spyfalcon and spysheriff. another no-no is DO NOT use windows malicious sofware removal....unless you would like every .exe on your system to be deleted and be left with a useless OS. I also might add that 90% of the time it is not necessary to have an active spyware/virus tool. This just leads to decreased performance. In closing, the most important issue is preemptive maintenance, (this comes with any security issues) close applications and services that aren't needed. I would also like to add that i have not ran an active antivirus tool in over 3 years and i have been virus free the entire time. All due to not being a retard and periodically scanning with the couple minor tools that i listed above. Now it's time for all the fanboys of those AV's i dogged on to bitch :D

Welcome to the boards Smitty. You've got some good advice there, and I tend to agree with most of it. The user is the best anti-virus, and while we, the computer literate, can stay virus free for the majority of the time without AVs, the computer illiterate cannot. Most good AVs these days are going to be resource hogs because of how low level they need to go. The resource mugging, though, is counter balanced by how powerful our PCs are becoming. So it's not that big of a deal if your AV is a memory hog. A good majority of viruses can be easily stopped by using a simple hardware firewall/router. That and your brain usually makes it easy to stay virus free. Hardware firewall + Linux means you're protected from 95% of the viruses out there.

A hardware firewall won't protect your computer from malware, but it can prevent that malware from opening and listening on a random port. This would prevent malware from turning your computer into a spam relay or something similar, but the virus/tojan/spyware/worm/whatever will still physically be on your computer.

A hardware firewall can protect local services on your computer from being exploited. (File/print sharing, remote connection, etc) Firewalls are not a substitute or replacement for good antimalware software, just as antimalware software is not a substitute for a firewall.

Keep in mind, an improperly configured firewall can do more harm then good. Your system could be wide open, but you'll *feel* safe since you have a blinking box that is supposed to protect you. There is no substitute for knowledge. Learn how firewalls work and configure them properly.

Security is a process, not a product. ;)
