Assholes who password RAR files

I think we can all agree that one of the most irritating things on the internet is downloading a big 3 RAR file porn video which takes you about an hour then when you go to extract it you have paste in a big complicated password and then find out it doesn't even work Honestly if I ran into someone that passwords RAR files (available for other people to download) I'd knock the prick out. What purpose does putting a password on a RAR file serve other than pissing people off?

Alright sorry about that little tantrum there I was just wondering why its so hard to unrar files with linux and if there is a better program than unrar available for Ubuntu. The problem I have is that even some rar files that aren't password protected the linux archive manager asks me to put in a password and entering a blank password doesn't work. Its not the kinda password prompt that comes up before you even get to look inside the RAR file its a password prompt that pops up about 20 seconds after you start extracting the file.

Its definitely an error the archive manager is making because sometimes when I restart my comp then try again it doesn't ask for a password.

Just use your update manager and search for "rar", or use the command line: "sudo apt-cache search rar"

I really hate password protected .rar/.zip files too man. It's not really the peopl that actually upload htem, it's the f***ing people that try to distrbute the shit that i want to kill man.

Yeah and the fact that cracking rar files is way beyond the scope of the layman makes it even worse. Some of the passwords I've seen are ridiculous I even have trouble copying and pasting them. I wouldn't waste my time trying to bruteforce a rar file cuz the kinda people that password them are the kinda nutjobs that use insane passwords like "!x$---BiGsMoKe---$x!". I actually saw that password used before.

As for cracing password .its not that difficult .
Use any of password crackers which are available for almost all of linux. or use binary if you are using gentoo

cracking a rar pass is difficult. there is still no way to do it except brute force (or dictionary), which is useless. i think i read that it is possible to crack zip if it contains 5 or more items, but could be bullshit...

Bruteforcing something is futile if the password is something like "!!-->>_BiGslVl0Ke53_<<_--!!" or some mad shit like so other methods would have to be used.

Well, technically that password is able to be cracked using brute force.

"!!-->>_BiGslVl0Ke53_<<_--!!" is 27 characters long. If we knew the exact length of the password and know that it can include all printable characters. There would be 93^27 possible combinations for this particular password. It's an ungodly number of combinations but given enough computing power could be cracked within the next 500 years.

Most of the problem with wrong rar password is the password in foreign language (other than English). Try 7 zip http://www.7-zip.org/ which resolve most of my rar problem and it shows you what foreign language you typed for the password field....

@sh_ithe_ad and For Those Interested- I'd try searching for the exact filename you downloaded [i.e. the first of the three files would be a good choice], see if any other forums or torrents host it stripped of its password/have other passwords listed as 'working'. The prior posts still apply.
