Router hacking question

Postby Panzerninja » Fri Jul 20, 2012 12:08 pm

Hi there,
I have been looking into learning some basic hacking skills. I decided to try and hack my friends old cisco Linksys WRT 400N, to get at the admin password. I did some looking around and tried using a brute force/dictionary attack using Brutus. However I keep getting a timeout/throttle error, and brutus never actually attempts to make an attack. The setup I am using is the basic HTTP route, port 80/8080, 10 connections, 30 sec timeout, HEAD/ keepalive, and a reasonably up to date wordlist. Am I doing something wrong and/or is there a better way?

Thanks for your help

I'd personally give the thing a factory reset, at which point the login will reset to default [admin\admin, admin\blank etc]. Then you could get in and set the password to something you have prior knowledge, say something easy first time around so that you can find the speed and usability of the tool in question [on that note, also check out Hydra]. Happy hacking =)

That's the thing, I already know what the admin password is. I set it up so it could be hacked easily, by A) making it easily brute forced and B) in my dictionary for that attack. I guess I will look in to hydra.........

Edit: I have a knoppix boot cd, would I be wrong to assume that i could use hyrda with that? (i would test it out myself but I am at work atm  )
