I just bought a D-Link wireless network card for the family computer today, I'd been meaning to get one for a while and I was at BestBuy and it was on sale so I snatched it....
the comp's about 40 feet away from the router with just one wall between them and their on the same story.... I can NOT establish a connection, tho, Windows gives me a list of availible networks, I select mine, and it immediately drops it....
I assume this means that my card is too weak? I wudda thought that 40 ft would be coverable by a (normally) $50 card, but I can't find anything on the box or instructions on the strength of the card :?

my laptop can connect....
I broke down and called (gasp) the D-Link tech-support, and the guy walked me thru every possible thing (which I'd already done) and in the end concluded that it must be the fact that the router is made by NetGear and it's having a problem communicating with the D-Link card :?
So I called NetGear, but since it's been more than 90 days since purchase their fat asses won't help with any "configuration" problems, only hardware malfunctions
btw, signal strength is at 42%, so that's not the problem....

I've actually noticed that to be a problem before. A lot of the 'mainstream' wireless products will not communicate with different brands. I don't know if this is a flaw, or done purposly, but I have seen this same thing many times before.

Opinions are like ass holes, everyone has one. It is also my opinion, that I am an ass hole.

I had the same problem, the cause was having more than one network in my auto connect list with roughly the same signal strengh... the card would never know which network to associate with and drop connections imediatelly after it associated.B-Con wrote:the comp's about 40 feet away from the router with just one wall between them and their on the same story.... I believe it operates on the 2.4 ghz frequency range....
You could get a 2.4 ghz brick amplifier and install it in between your antenna and up the power leaving the AP -- but if you boast all the power going through the ap you run the risk of smoking the circuitry.
Talk to some HAM radio operators -- they know all about brick amplifiers -- might not know much about AP's but they know their radio gear.
