I need help with Kali Linux

Post by skeleton » Fri Jul 08, 2016 10:37 pm

Hi.
So I have been trying to download and use Kali Linux for a while now and I can't get it to work.
Im using Oracle Box VM and the problem is that when I load it up it shows me a screen that shows 2 options

Kali GNU/Linux

and

Advanced options for Kali GNU/Linux

If I pick any of them I get sent to a black screen that says "Loading please wait..."
I've waited around a hour and that screen stays the same. I have no idea what to do and any help would be appreciated.

What sort of hardware are you running this on? Usually these sort of things happen with a CPU that does not support virtual machine extensions.

Also;
- Make sure you set the right OS type in virtualbox. Otherwise it might try do do odd workarounds/optimizations that don't work out so well on other OS'es.
- Check the 'Live CD' box in the storage settings when configuring the ISO, just in case it's trying to eject the virtual drive for any reason.

Well I'm running Oracle box on a HP Laptop (It's also fairly new)

My OS is Windows 10

I have a Intel i3 CPU (I think it's 2 cores though it might be more)

I have a 64 bit operating system

That's pretty much all I can tell about my hardware. However the ISO I used was 32 bit so maybe that has something to do with it (and the reason I used a 32 bit ISO is because Oracle box only had 32 bit linux OS's)
Im pretty sure I have the right OS type (mostly because I did the full installation without a problem) but I will list it anyway: The OS type is Debain (32 bit)
I also went ahead and checked Live CD.
(I would like to note that I didn't burn the ISO to a CD or anything, should I have done that?)

I'm reasonably sure all i3's support Intel VT-x at least, so that shouldn't be the problem.

I'm a bit puzzled about the 64/32 bit issue you have going on, but that shouldn't be a problem either way. There should be no reason to run a 32 bit version, but it shouldn't break anything either.

I'd expect Debian to work as the OS setting since kali is a debian derivative, but just to check you can set it to generic 32 bit linux (2.6.x/3.x/4.x) and see if that makes a difference. It sounds like something may have gone wrong with the install though. I though you meant it was not booting the LiveCD at all, but if that runs and went through the install I would not expect the OS settings to be an issue anymore really. I'd say just try the install again and read the on-screen instructions closely so you don't accidentally miss any steps.

Also don't bother burning the iso no, there's no reason to and it'll only be slower and more error prone.

In closing, I have one additional question; If you're going to run it in virtualbox anyway, why don't you just download the prebuilt kali virtualbox image?

I do have that on my PC, however it is a .7z file and for the life of me I can't figure out how to extract it. I know it probably sounds stupid but I have no idea what to do with it.

7z is a very common compressed file format (like zip or rar etc.) http://www.7-zip.org/download.html

I extracted it but all I got was a bunch of .mdk files. I used 7-zip to extract it.

Sounds like you downloaded the wrong image. Those are VMWare image files, the VirtualBox image has an ova file in it.
You might still be able to use it as Virtualbox can read vmdk files. You can attach them to an existing virtual machine or tell it to use an existing disk when you create a new virtual machine.

Unfortunately I cannot load any of the .vmdk files. I was quite sure that I installed the correct file, but ill try again just for good measure.

Yeah I just re installed the files and extracted them again and got the same result. I don't know what to do.

I'm really, really sure you're downloading the wrong file. I downloaded the virtualbox image and extracted it just to double check. The Vbox image really contains an ova file. My guess is you've not spotted that there's two tabs on the image download, and that it's on the vmware tab by default.

Well I suppose the best I can do is download the file again. I'll see if that works.

Hint; if your 7z file is called Kali-Linux-2016.1-vm-amd64.7z or Kali-Linux-2016.1-vm-i686.7z, you have the wrong file and it will have the vmware image. The virtualbox files are called Kali-Linux-2016.1-vbox-amd64.7z or Kali-Linux-2016.1-vbox-i686.7z

Yeah I just noticed that after I downloaded it for the third time. Though my internet is shit right now so it will probably take all night to download the file.

Yeah I download the correct file this time, I extracted it and I got a .ova file. I can't load it into virtual box. I don't know what to do.

(I would also like to note that i'm not very used to oracle box)

You can just import it using the "import appliance" option in the VirtualBox menu. Now I'm not trying to be a dick here, but I am starting to feel like a lot of these questions could have been answered by looking at the very first result in Google.

Sorry for the trouble with me being a idiot.
Anyway I loaded it and... i'm in the black "loading please wait..." screen.
I have looked all over google for a solution to this and I can't find much.
Right now i'm just going to leave oracle box running all night to see if I can get out of the loading screen.
Any advice would be appreciated.

In short; I'm not sure.

I've not heard of this issue with virtualbox. (Or any other hypervisor for that matter.) It seems like all the ideas I've had as to what might cause it have been ruled out by now. But if it's causing you this much trouble to boot the installed system, and booting the live image does work, you could consider just doing your work in a live booted env and only ever hibernating the VM rather than ever shutting it down.

Hmm I'll try that. If all else fails I will just probably post here again.
