HOW-TO: Join #hackerthreads on IRC !

Post by Aiden » Sat Jan 10, 2009 3:39 pm

NoUse's guide was kinda outdated and I was unable to send people to it to get XChat up and running whilst I persuaded them IRC was their future. Therefore, I remade it with the new version of XChat - and lots of pictures.

What is IRC
Wikipedia says:
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet chat or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message, as well as chat and data transfers via Direct Client-to-Client.
Which, in this case, means basically, "A small chatroom revolving around a small niche. In the case of #hackerthreads, that niche is computers, security, programming, geek stuff, girls, and drinking." It also means if you've never been on IRC before, now is the best time to do so!

Lets get Started
First, download XChat from http://www.xchat.org/.
Image

When it's done, start it up. You'll be presented with the XChat network list. It comes preconfigured with a lot of popular IRC networks like Freenode and Efnet, but we'll want to add our own (TDDIRC) to it. So, click Add.
Image

It'll make a new entry in the list. Name it TDDIRC and press enter.
Image

Now click on TDDIRC and press Edit. We need to tell XChat the server location and whatnot.
Image

Type in irc.tddirc.net/6667 for the server and press enter. If you don't press enter to confirm it, sometimes it reverts back to the default one you're changing it from.
Image

Now check the "Connect to this network on startup" box and type in #hackerthreads for the channel to join. Finish by clicking close.
Image

Now that your settings are correct, press Connect.
Image

Congratulations, you're now an official IRCer. :D

Why not? It's sleek, simple, easy to use, and it works.

So is mIRC. And mIRC has super-awesome scripting capabilities. To do anything like that with XChat, you've got to install and learn Python, or whatever other languages they support. Lame.

It's a noob guide.. Noobs aren't going to be writing scripts. But I get your point.

Which requires finding and installing the proper parser for it, taking up more space on your hard drive.

I dunno, I just tried using it and getting it to do the same things that I can make mIRC do, and I couldn't get it. It's not as easy.

I already have perl pre-installed on any linux machine I use XChat on - which doesn't take up any space at all, so no worries about that. And when I'm on windows I just use batch scripts, which come with every installation of Windows.

I'm not going to argue with you, however. My preference: I like it. I find mIRC annoying and hard to use, but that's probably because I never took the time needed to learn it inside out - like I did XChat. ;)
installing the proper parser for it
Also, wat.

Try using irc.hackerthreads.org instead.

Looks like someone accidentally banned the entire webchat rather than a single user.
If we're breaking the rules, then how come you can't catch us? You can't find us? I know why. Cause, it's ... MAGIC!
Hackerthreads chat, where the party is going 24/7.

Looks cool. I remember IRC back in the day for Counter Strike. I might have to hop on and check it out.

I use HexChat (a fork of xchat ) because it's a more updated (secure) than xchat.
I'm surprised that people are still using xchat!
